Digital Signage Best Practices

Be direct and concise

  • Present only the most important information, such as the date, time, event title, location, sponsoring organization and contact information.
  • Keep content under 30-40 words. Ads will only appear for 10-15 seconds at a time. Passersby will most likely ignore excessively wordy ads.
  • Include a call to action, such as a QR code and URL that links to a website, a social page, etc.

Ensure content is accessible

  • Practice good design principles following the basic elements of design.
  • Use good contrast, ideally with dark type on a light background.
  • Use a clean, easily readable font, preferably a sans serif such as Helvetica, Open Sans. Fonts should be bold and as large as possible, ideally readable from at least 6 feet away.
  • Adhere to all ADA compliance guidelines. More information can be found on ada.gov.

What to avoid

  • Too much text. 40 words max.
  • Stretched or distorted photos and logos.
  • Too many colors.
  • Typos and grammatical errors.
  • Blurry QR codes.
  • Long URLs.
  • Low-resolution/pixelated images.
