WordPress Permissions and Access

All content editors (Cascade and WordPress) must complete the university’s accessibility training through Siteimprove before they will be given access to edit content or manage updates on their site or pages. All those who complete the Accessibility Fundamentals for the Web course will receive a certificate of completion. This certificate should be emailed to [email protected] prior to web access being given.

 
  • Administrator

    This is the highest level of permission. Admins have the power to access almost everything. Only admins can manage user access and roles.

    • Users
      • EngComm web team
      • Support team from IT departments, if necessary
  • Editor

    Editors have access to all posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags, and can upload media.

    • Users
      • Content editor(s) – individuals assigned to manage and update content for the site(s). Should be limited to three content editors per site (a designated primary content editor plus two supporting editors).
  • Section-Specific Editor

    Section-specific content editors can manage content in specific areas of a website. For example, if we had a website with news, research, and a directory, we could create a role with the ability for an editor to only manage news content. This is not a default WordPress role and can only be managed using our supported Advanced Access Manager plugin.

  • Author

    Authors can write, upload media, edit, and publish their own posts.

    • Users
      • Student workers supporting content editors
  • Contributor

    Contributors have no publishing or uploading capability but can write and edit their own posts until they are published.

    • Users
      • Default role. It is not needed but can’t be removed.
  • Viewer

    Viewers can read and comment on posts and pages on private sites.

    • Users
      • Stakeholders which may need access to provide feedback on content prior to content being published. This role is ideal for faculty or leadership wanting site access with no intention to make updates or edit content on the site.
  • Subscriber

    Subscribers are people who subscribe to your site using an email address. They may or may not have a WordPress.com account.

    • Users
      • Default role when one signs up for WordPress
